The Getty Challenges People to Recreate Great Artworks at Home

twitter/getty

Art imitates life. But when ordinary life seems to be on hold, it’s time to imitate art. That’s the idea behind a social media challenge issued by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. With nearly all museums closed globally to stop the spread of coronavirus, people are looking to engage with art in new ways, and museums are trying to keep connected to their patrons from a distance. Enter social media and a prompt that many have found irresistible.

Inspired by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Instagram account @tussenkunstenquarantaine (“between art and quarantine” in Dutch), the Getty Museum recently charged their followers with recreating great works of art in their collections using only what they have lying around the house. The challenge has drawn a massive response from around the world. With many stuck at home due to social distancing, it's time to get creative, and not just with what we have in our pantries, but with any and everything else we suddenly find ourselves locked indoors with.

Check out these fun and impressive reinterpretations of great artworks:

A lot of folks seem to have plenty of toilet paper, which serves as a versatile prop.

And who knows what raiding your recycling bin could turn up.

Other common props include children and pets, our constant companions in life and in quarantine.
