Rufino Tamayo (1899–1991), one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, was drawn to New York City at a time when unparalleled transatlantic and hemispheric cross-cultural exchange was taking place. “Tamayo: The New York Years” is the first exhibition to explore the influences between this major Mexican modernist and the American art world. It reveals how a Mexican artist forged a new path in the modern art of the Americas and contributed to New York’s dynamic cultural scene as the city was becoming a center of postwar art.

Artissima Contemporary Art Fair opens this week in Torino, Italy. In its 24th year showcasing contemporary art, the fair packs a lot in from November 3-5. Featuring 2,000 works represented by galleries from 31 countries, Artissima is hosted at the Torino Oval Lingotto, originally built to host the 2006 Winter Olympics. The High Museum of Art is the first venue in the United States to present “Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design” (Oct. 14, 2017, through Jan. 7, 2018), a major touring exhibition organized by the Vitra Design Museum and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
Over the past year, museums, galleries, auction houses, and even one entire town have paid homage to the founding of the ground-breaking movement of art and architecture known as De Stijl. The founding of De Stijl in the Netherlands is often simply attributed to Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, but alongside was Theo van Doesburg, a painter who promoted De Stijl through architecture. There were other artists, too, including Vilnos Huzzan and Max Burchartz as well as architectural practitioners Gerrit Thomas Rietveld and J.J.P. Oud.
