At 94 years old, Robert Kipniss is considered to be one of the greatest living American printmakers, with a significant body of work that can be found in over 170 museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The British Museum, London; the Albertina, Vienna; The Bibliothéque Nationale de France, Paris; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, among many others.
Born in Brooklyn in 1931, Kipniss studied English literature, art and art history at the Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and the University of Iowa. While Kipniss has painted in oil throughout his life, he focused on stone lithography during his early career and has predominantly worked in mezzotint printmaking since the early 1990s, where he has left an indelible mark as one of the medium’s most respected practitioners.
