Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates will hold a catalogued auction of antiques, fine and decorative arts, and 20th century design on April 29 beginning at 9:30 am ET. The large auction consists of institutional and private consignments, highlighted by the collection of the late Winslow Anderson (1917-2007) of Milton, WV, being sold to benefit the Huntington Museum of Art. Anderson was an important designer at Blenko Glass (1947-1953) and Lenox China (1953-1980). He also studied painting and drawing with Hans Hofmann and other influential American artists. This auction will include a large selection of Anderson’s artwork as well as works he collected in Latin America, many examples of his Blenko and Lenox designs, both prototype and commercial pieces, plus more. Much of the Anderson material was the focus of several museum exhibitions.
The sale will also feature an extensive selection of fine antique and vintage jewelry, highlighted by a spectacular, nearly flawless 5.09 ct. diamond solitaire ring in a platinum setting. Graded VVS-2, the ring comes from the estate of Mrs. Fortunetta S. Lees of Chicago, Illinois and includes paperwork from a 1956 appraisal of family valuables. Additional jewelry, including Art Deco and Victorian examples from the private collection of Luke and Ann Woods of Cincinnati, Ohio and Spruce Pine, North Carolina, rounds out what will be a strong category of the sale.
Rare Asian material, featuring a choice assortment of Chinese ceramics and Oriental rugs, forms another strong portion of the auction. Noteworthy in this segment of the sale are a Yongzheng period guan-type “Eight Horses of Muwang” vase and a fine Star Ushak carpet fragment, probably dating to the 17th or 18th century, the latter being deaccessioned by The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) to benefit the collections and acquisitions funds. Early carved jade objects, export porcelain and several articles bearing ox-blood glaze, as well as a bronze Guan Yu War God figure, will also be offered.
Another robust category, a large assortment of art glass, will also be featured in the sale and incorporates a number of fine American, English, and Continental examples. Highlights include an outstanding group of late 19th-century cameo vases, rare Tiffany vases, and other desirable examples from various makers such as Thomas Webb & Sons, Daum Nancy, Lalique, Galle, Quezal, and others. A select assortment of studio glass will also be offered in the auction along with English and European furniture and accessories; paintings, prints, and statuary; sterling silver, including several large flatware services; Arts & Crafts and art pottery; 18th & 19th century porcelain; plus much more.
