Louise Nevelson: Black and White

Pace Gallery
537 West 24th Street, New York

February 1 through March 3, 2018

Pace Gallery presents an exhibition of works by leading Abstract Expressionist Louise Nevelson. Arne Glimcher, Pace Gallery Founder, has worked with Nevelson and her estate for the last 55 years, and is honored to “present such incredible work to new audiences.”

Black and White is the gallery’s 27th solo show featuring Nevelson since 1963. The exhibition brings together 20 of Nevelson’s iconic black and white painted wood sculptures, wall reliefs, and installations from the late 1950s through the late 1980s. Renowned for majestic monochromatic works, Nevelson pioneered site-specific and installation art. She transformed discarded wooden furniture and other found wooden objects into nested, box-like structures, painting them in monochromatic black, white, or gold to unify the disparate parts. Pace’s joint presentation of Nevelson’s black and white works illustrates her interest in light and shadow. The white sculptures explore the metaphor of dawn, with all their fragments revealed in bright white, while the black sculptures absorb light, adding an air of shadowed mystery.
