How Wendell Castle Blurred the Line Between Art & Design

In this episode of Masterworks: Expert Voices, join Sotheby’s Kimberly Miller in an introduction to famed American designer Wendell Castle via his elegant piece Executive Desk. Best known as the founding father of the Art Furniture movement, Castle began his career as a sculptor and applied this training to produce functional furniture with a distinctly striking aesthetic. Using stack lamination, a technique he helped develop in the 1960s, Castle carved this dynamic and voluminous design out of layered wood. Executive Desk will be offered in Sotheby’s Important Design sale. (12 December | New York)
