Modern British & Irish Art Evening Sale Launches 20th Century at Christie’s Totalling £20,199,500 / $25,734,162 / €22,966,831

André Zlattinger, Head of Modern British & Irish Art and Will Porter, Head of Sale: “The Modern British & Irish Art Evening Sale launched 20th Century at Christie’s (17 – 30 June 2017) totalling £20,199,500 / $25,734,162 / €22,966,831 and was led by Henry Moore’s Family Group which saw spirited bidding in the room and on the phone, selling for £3,861,000 / $4,918,914 / €4,389,957 to an Asian collector.

Barbara Hepworth’s Curved Form (Bryher II) realised £3,301,000 / $4,205,474 / €3,753,237 and is currently featured in the exhibition ‘Sculpture in the Square’, an outdoor sculpture garden set within St James’s Square, until 29 June 2017.

The sale opened with a world auction record for Henry Lamb’s Portrait of Edie McNeill (£281,000 / $357,994 / €319,497), a painting formerly in the collection of Captain John Ernest Crawford Flitch. 

Additional records were achieved for Victor Pasmore’s Linear Motif in Black and White (£329,000 / $419,146 / €374,073) and Nic Fiddian-Green’s Still Water (£209,000 / $266,266 / €237,633).

A record in the medium was realised for L. S. Lowry’s 1939 drawing A Station Platform (£269,000 / $342,706 / €305,853). Registered bidders from 10 countries demonstrate the global appeal for key works from the 20th Century with sell-through rates of 69% by lot and 82% by value.
