Opening to the public today in Miami Beach, Art Basel is one of the largest and most anticipated art fairs in the US. A giant party combining high-stakes networking and a sales events, art stars are made at Art Basel (or at least they hope to be). This year over 200 international galleries are bringing artworks by over 4,000 artists, displayed in a range of categories: Nova (works created in the last three years); Positions (contemporary artists presenting one major project); Edition (published works, prints, and multiples); Kabinett (a miniature exhibition curated by an artist for a gallery); Survey (significant works from the past); and Public (public art installations in Collins Park). There will also be film presentations, representation from magazines, and a series of conversations.

Art Basel coincides with Miami Art Week, and the combination of the art fair with museum shows, concerts and parties all over the city make Miami the undeniable destination for the art world this week. Included in the slew of openings and receptions this week is the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami, which opened in a new permanent home. Their inaugural exhibition, The Everywhere Studio, explores the significance of the studio in the works of modern and contemporary artists.
