Donald Judd: Paintings

Museum

Donald Judd: Paintings marks the first museum exhibition dedicated to 13 rarely-exhibited or published paintings by the pioneering artist, created over the course of three crucial transitional years when Judd was experimenting with form and color. Though Judd is commonly associated with large-scale sculptures and installations, during his early years, he experimented in painting with surface, form, space and color, as well as unique curved forms and patterns. These early paintings, which have not been on view together previously, reveal his transition from abstraction to flat fields of color and lines, which eventually manifested into the three-dimensional works that have come to define his practice.

Curated by Flavin Judd, Curator and Co-President of Judd Foundation, ICA Miami Director Ellen Salpeter, and ICA Miami Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Alex Gartenfeld, the exhibition offers an expanded understanding of the artist through this understudied facet of his practice.
