About the Artist

Camille Pissarro
Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter, born on the island of St. Thomas, then part of the Danish West Indies. A pivotal figure in the development of Impressionism, Pissarro's career spanned over six decades. His early works, such as "The Côte des Bœufs, near Pontoise" (1877), reflected the Impressionist style with its loose brushstrokes and emphasis on light. Later, he collaborated with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, adopting a Neo-Impressionist technique known as Pointillism or Divisionism, as seen in "Hay Harvest at Éragny" (1889). Pissarro's commitment to the movement and his influence on artists like Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin solidify his legacy as a pioneering force in the evolution of modern art.
