About the Artist
Sol LeWitt
Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) was an influential American artist known for his pioneering role in the development of minimalism and conceptual art. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, LeWitt studied at Syracuse University and served in the U.S. Army before moving to New York City, where he worked as a graphic designer and later found inspiration in the city's vibrant art scene. LeWitt is best known for his wall drawings, sculptures, and structures, often composed of simple geometric forms such as cubes, lines, and grids. His work emphasized the importance of the concept behind the artwork over its execution, famously stating that "the idea becomes a machine that makes the art." This approach challenged traditional notions of authorship and craftsmanship, as LeWitt often provided instructions for others to carry out his work, making the process of creation collaborative and iterative.
