About the Item
Sorry for the reflections on the glass - I did not want to disassemble the ornate antique gold frame in order to photograph the art. At any rate - this is a beautifully accomplished turn-of-the-century watercolor by the American painter Frank English, who studied under famed landscape artist Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art -n 1881 - 1882, and exhibited there himself. Though he travelled and painted in Europe, he spent most of his time in Pennsylvania, and was best known for rural scenes such as this. Here we see superbly-rendered workhorses (expertly foreshortened) stopped at the side of the road as a farmer speaks to an acquaintance. The sun pours across the road in the distance, and on the right we see a sunlit river valley. The rendering and balance of shade and light are exquisite. Dimensions given are with frame - this is a large work of art.
