About The Artist
Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker renowned for his satirical caricatures and social commentary. Born in Marseille, Daumier moved to Paris at a young age, where he became immersed in the vibrant cultural and political life of the city. Daumier is best known for his lithographs, which he used to critique the political and social issues of his time. His work appeared in popular publications like La Caricature and Le Charivari, where he targeted politicians, lawyers, and the bourgeoisie with sharp wit and keen observation. His caricatures of King Louis-Philippe, whom he famously depicted as a gluttonous pear, were particularly famous and even led to his imprisonment for six months in 1832.
