Joey Terrill, Still Life with Triumeq, Turnips, Eggplant & a Red Rose, 2024, will be featured in the benefit.

In efforts to hold fast against oil magnates, actress Jane Fonda has partnered up with Larry Gagosian and Christie’s to organize a fundraiser in support of the Campaign for a Safe and Healthy California. Through this two-part benefit exhibition and auction, Fonda et al. hope to raise money to counter the repeal of a California state safety law which increased restrictions on oil production in 2022.

The ticketed benefit, “Art for a Safe and Healthy California,” takes place on April 9 in Beverly hills and features pieces donated by fellow artists who aim to aid the protection of Gavin Newsom's Senate Bill 1173. The exhibition includes artwork by Frank Gehry, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Catherine Opie, Christina Quarles, Ed Ruscha, Jonas Wood, Joey Terrill, Hank Willis Thomas, Karon Davis, Marilyn Minter, Nan Goldin, Mark Grotjahn and Jackie Amézquita, to name a few. Hosted by Fonda, Larry Gagosian and Aileen Getty, the event also includes a live performance by co-host John Legend.

A select amount of work displayed at “Art for a Safe and Healthy California” will head to Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale in May, while another group will make up the sale floor at a summer exhibition at Gagosian’s Beverly Hills gallery.

“I am thrilled to be able to use my love of art to propel the fight against climate injustice while simultaneously uplifting the work of these talented and generous artists," said Fonda in a statement reported by ARTnews. The bill that is now in jeopardy of being overturned, which is entitled California Oil and Gas Well Regulations Referendum and is on California’s November ballot, prevents new oil wells from being built closer than 3,200 feet from homes, parks, schools, health care facilities and detention centers.
