About The Artist
Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, known as Toulouse Lautrec, was a prominent French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist, and illustrator in the late 19th century. Born into aristocracy on November 24, 1864, he suffered from a rare condition, pycnodysostosis, which stunted his growth due to undersized legs, resulting from leg fractures during adolescence. Immersed in the vibrant and theatrical life of Paris, his experiences, especially his interest in brothels and prostitutes, influenced his art, capturing the bohemian lifestyle of the time. Recognized as a Post-Impressionist, along with Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec's work was highly valued, with his painting "La Blanchisseuse" selling for $22.4 million at a 2005 Christie's auction. He passed away on September 9, 1901.
