Christie's 19th & 20th Century Art Evening Sale

Christie's started off a big week of auctions with a bang last night. Their 19th & 20th Century Art Evening Sale, the first in a series of auctions of the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, totaled over $646 million dollars. Touted as the most valuable collection ever offered at auction, all proceeds will go to some of the many charities the Rockefellers supported.

Leading last night's sale was a Rose period Picasso, “Fillette à la corbeille fleurie,” selling for $115 million. Other notable works included those from Monet, Matisse, Corot and Delacroix, all of which set records for the artists at auction.

Five more live Rockefeller auctions, in addition to online sales, continue throughout the week. Today English & European Furniture, Ceramics and Decorations Part I from the collection will be offered. Works from Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, and Diego Rivera are highlights of their impressive Art of the Americas sale, taking place tonight in New York.

Auctions later in the week include a Fine Art Day Sale, as well as English & European Furniture, Ceramics and Decorations Part II  and Travel and Americana. Be sure to follow Christie’s for auction results, as more records will surely be set.
