New York – Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary is pleased to share, Debora Hirsch: Firmamento. On view through April 16, 2021, the exhibition will feature a selection of works by Debora Hirsch from three of her most significant series to date.

Debora Hirsch (b. 1967, São Paulo) is a Milan-based Brazilian artist. At once beautiful and jarring, Hirsch’s multimedia conceptual practice is deeply concerned with power structures and interconnected networks. As Hirsch meticulously constructs each work, she continually investigates and calls into question themes of contemporary anthropology, unnoticed realities, the prevalence of media and technology, and the colonization of the Americas.

Her erudite multimedia oeuvre often takes from the artist’s own archive—composed mainly of historical source material, art, architecture, and digital ephemera—to explore these ideas through harmonious yet complex constructions. Though deeply entrenched in these questions, Hirsch’s work additionally emphasizes a “metaphysical conception of art.” This exhibition will present multimedia work from the series Firmamento (2019-present), The Iconography of Silence (2019), and Donotclickthru (2016), which reflect Hirsch’s intense desire to raise questions and heighten awareness around histories and situations of injustice.

Debora Hirsch holds an MSc in Industrial Engineering from the University of São Paulo, and an MBA from Bocconi University in Milan. She worked in the business sector for twelve years before deciding to dedicate herself exclusively to her artistic practice, which she has cultivated throughout her life. Since 2005, Debora Hirsch has become a strong presence in Italy and in other international art circles, exhibiting in numerous solo and group shows. Hirsch recently participated in group exhibitions at Smack Mellon (2020) and A.I.R. Gallery (2020) in New York.

She has also developed her practice through residencies at BoCS Art (Cosenza, Italy, 2019), AnnexB (New York, 2019), and RU Residency Unlimited (New York, 2018). Hirsch’s work can be found in a number of public collections in Europe and South America including MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art (Krakow, Poland), MuBe Museu Brasileiro da Escultura e Ecologia (São Paulo, Brazil), Fondation Francès (Senlis, France), Fondation Benetton (Treviso, Italy), and Fondazione Rivoli2 (Milano, Italy).

Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary is a newly established Upper East Side gallery specializing in modern and contemporary Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Art. Through its exhibitions, it aims to augment the visibility of work by artists from these groups and foster critical engagement. Isabella Hutchinson, the gallery’s founder and director, has over three decades of experience in the acquisition and sale of works from the region, particularly as a result of her tenure as head of Sotheby’s Latin American Art Department in New York.
