Karl Brandstätter, born in 1946 in Lautz near Villach, Austria, began his artistic journey at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1965. In 1966-67, he attended the Summer Academy in Salzburg, where he studied etching with Johnny Friedlaender. In 1968, he was awarded a scholarship by the French government, prompting his move to Paris, where he earned his diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
Throughout his career, Brandstätter pursued further studies in diverse locations, including Egypt, Hong Kong, Norway, Morocco, Oman, and Turkey, as well as spending 1987–1989 in New York. Notably, in 1980, he designed the postage stamp "Modern Art in Austria." A member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus since 1995, he was honored with the title of “Professor” by the President of Austria in 2000. In 2005, he served as a visiting professor at the Nanjing Art Institute in China.
His works are featured in prestigious collections, including the Albertina in Vienna, Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, Musée Ixelles in Brussels, Kunstsammlung Klagenfurt, Landesgalerie Klagenfurt, and the Wella Foundation in Germany.
