About the Artist
Samuel Palmer
Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) was an English landscape painter and printmaker associated with the Romantic movement. Born in London, Palmer was a key figure in the Shoreham Ancients, a group of artists inspired by medieval and Renaissance art. His early works, such as "The Magic Apple Tree" (1830), exhibit a mystical and visionary quality, depicting idyllic landscapes influenced by a deep connection with nature. Palmer's mature style evolved towards a more personal and symbolic approach, characterized by rich, luminous colors and intricate detailing. Although overshadowed in his lifetime, his influence on later Romantic and Symbolist artists, as well as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, has garnered recognition for his significant contributions to 19th-century British art.
