About the Artist
Doris Jarowsky
The small-scale bronze of the General Napoleon by American artist Doris Jarowsky is an excellent example of the sculpture of the 1960s. The sculpture is at once traditional and avant-garde: the subject of Napoleon is shown standing on a pedestal, as though he was standing on a tall pedestal of a public historical marker. At the same time, however, he is constructed out of torn sheets of clay and way, each assembled like cubist planes with rough edges before being cast in bronze. These rough surfaces and edges are markers of artists exploring the materiality of their medium, which can be seen in the works of artists of the period such as Harry Bertoia and Alberto Giacometti.
