Equivocal Pleasures is an acrylic painting that frames a female figure overlooking a still life table with photos, roses, and a small devil figure, among other things. Contreras reflects on culture and femininity through figure painting. This work was made for "Distant Figures" a group show at LaiSun Keane (November 1 - December 22, 2024).

About the Artist

Gina M. Contreras

Born in Fresno, California, Gina M. Contreras incorporates drawing and painting to examine the complexity of traditional and cultural standards. Contreras uses self-portraits to embrace the narrative between her conventional Chicana upbringing and her admiration for modern lowbrow culture of self-awareness and body acceptance.

In 2008, she received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US and internationally. She currently lives and works in San Francisco.
